ChatGPT Can Now Text From Your Mac. Should Real Estate Agents Let It Text Clients?

Since Aug 20, ChatGPT can read, search and send your iMessages and texts from a Mac, asking your approval before each send by default. It works only in the Mac desktop app on Apple silicon, not on your iPhone. For agents, it's handy for digging through old threads and risky for anything sent to a client without a second look.

What the plugin does

The Apple Messages plugin lets ChatGPT read and search your iMessage, SMS and RCS conversations and send messages through Messages on your Mac.

It's on all ChatGPT plans, in the Mac desktop app on Apple silicon.
It works inside ChatGPT Work or Codex chats, not regular chats.
It isn't available on the web or in the phone app.
By default, ChatGPT sends only after you approve the message and its recipients.
Green-bubble texts from a Mac need an iPhone set up to share them, per Apple.

How to set it up

OpenAI's own setup is four steps, and the third one is where you give it access to your Mac.

01Open Plugins in the ChatGPT Mac app, find Apple Messages and install it.
02Start a ChatGPT Work or Codex chat.
03Grant the macOS permissions it asks for. TechCrunch and MacRumors report it needs Full Disk Access, which reaches well beyond Messages; MacRumors adds contacts and automation.
04Review each message and its recipients before you allow a send.

Where it helps an agent

The safest uses are the ones where ChatGPT reads and you decide.

Find what a seller told you by text months ago.
Summarize a long thread with a buyer before you call them.
List the clients who asked a question you never answered.
Draft a reply that you edit and approve yourself.

The risks with client texts

Your clients never agreed to have an AI read their texts, and critics say that is the real problem.

Proton, which makes a competing product, points out that anyone you text can end up in an AI pipeline because you used the plugin.
Full Disk Access reaches beyond Messages, including Mail and Safari history, according to Proton.
"Always allow" for a chat removes your last review. OpenAI itself warns that it "removes your final chance to review a message."
Where your texts end up: OpenAI told TechCrunch message content is stored on your computer, not its servers. But anything the plugin pulls into a ChatGPT Work chat becomes part of that chat, and OpenAI's Work help page says chat messages and task context may be stored in the cloud even when work runs locally.
Training: personal plans (Free, Go, Plus, Pro) may be used to train models unless you opt out. Business, Enterprise and Edu are off by default.

Rules if you use it

Use it like a research tool with read access, and keep the send button yours.

01Never turn on "Always allow" for a client chat.
02Use a Business plan, or turn off model training on a personal plan.
03Stay out of threads with loan documents, ID numbers or lockbox codes.
04Remember it runs on your Mac. It's not something you can use from your phone at a showing.
05Check your brokerage's AI policy before you connect client texts.
